The Lafayette College men’s basketball team lost in overtime to Lehigh University, 93-86, at Kirby Fieldhouse in Easton on Wednesday night.
The loss is the eighth straight to Lehigh, in what allegedly passes for a rivalry series. The Leopards have also lost eight straight to Navy, another conference opponent, as Lafayette continues to fail to compete in the Patriot League. The Leopards are in last place.
Close games, overtime, “bad calls” and good effort: it all adds up to spin for a team that is 4-15 in Division 1 games, 2-7 in league play. Lafayette would have to win six of its final nine games to finish the regular season with 10 D1 wins. Lafayette also has a win over Rosemont, a Division 3 program.
After a 75-75 tie in regulation, Lafayette could do nothing to stop Lehigh’s Jordan Cohen, who made all six of his OT shots. Cohen scored 14 of Lehigh’s 18 extra-time points as the Lafayette defense was absent.
Junior Lukas Jarrett led Lafayette with 17 points. Senior Paulius Zalys did not make a basket from the field.
Athletic Director Sherryta Freeman has a front-row seat to the struggles of Head Coach Fran O’Hanlon’s team. How this all fits into her “Building a Championship Culture” goal remains a mystery.
